About Blacksmith Capital
Blacksmith Capital was formed by a group of experienced venture capitalists and technology executives on July 1, 2003 to create a new franchise working with the very best entrepreneurs in the technology markets. Our goal is to build a portfolio of market-leading technology companies that differentiate themselves through superior, equity-efficient execution.
Equity Efficiency is a passionate term for this franchise. The ability to ‘do more with less’ and to focus the business on what customers want and will pay for today are very important to us as investors. Additionally, we want our portfolio companies to deliver quantifiable return on investment or enable new application technologies. We are very pro-active in how we source and manage our portfolio and we adhere to disciplined investment and portfolio management practices acquired while at previous, premier venture capital firms.
The receipt of venture capital dollars, however, is a two-way street and while we have very high expectations of our entrepreneurs and portfolio, our involvement with portfolio companies and their management should be held to the highest standards as well. A successful, previously backed entrepreneur for Blacksmith’s founder summed up our job best when he wrote these words:
- “Great venture capitalists provide perspective to your efforts. They serve as an independent and objective check on your vision, business model, and executive team. They push you in the right direction to grow a business.
- Great venture capitalists hold you accountable to the appropriate metrics. They know how to patiently demand achieving business milestones.
- Most importantly, great venture capitalists ask the hard questions and are willing to tell you truths that others might not recognize or be unwilling to address. You count on them as an indispensable part of your business team - especially at the early stages of a new enterprise.”
We strive every day to be that great venture capitalist.
